Robot Topological Map Generation from Formal Route Instructions
نویسندگان
چکیده
1 Mobile robots and Humanoids need to use spatial information about their surrounding environment in order to effectively plan and execute navigation tasks. This spatial information can be presented in various ways to increase the interaction between the human and the robot. One of the more effective ways is by describing the route verbally which bridges the gap between the forms of spatial knowledge of such robots and the forms of language used by humans. In this paper, we build a topological map for robot route description. This map represents the route’s motion actions and spatial relationships graphically to plan robot’s navigation task. The map is generated by using Formal Route Instructions (FRIs) to simplify the route description process and also to avoid ambiguity. FRIs are designed to be simple, easy to use, and suitable for naïve users.

Natural Language Generation in the Context of Providing Indoor Route Instructions
Modern robotics applications require robots to be able to communicate with humans seamlessly and effectively. We propose a structured algorithm for natural language generation in the context of indoor route instructions that allows a robot to combine metrical, topological and semantic information about the surrounding environment while generating natural language instructions. Our method learns...
متن کاملA Cognitively Motivated Route-Interface for Mobile Robot Navigation
A more natural interaction between humans and mobile robots can be achieved by bridging the gap between the format of spatial knowledge used by robots and the format of languages used by humans. This enables both sides to communicate by using shared knowledge. Spatial knowledge can be (re)presented in various ways to increase the interaction between humans and mobile robots. One effective way i...
متن کاملA Framework for Understanding Verbal Route Instructions
My goal is to understand human verbal route instructions by modeling and implementing the language, knowledge representation, and cognitive processes needed to communicate about spatial routes. To understand human route instructions, I ran a study of how people give and follow route instructions. I modeled the language used in the route instruction texts using standard computational linguistics...
متن کاملTopological Large-Scale Off-road Navigation and Exploration
A large-scale navigation system for autonomous off-road robots is presented which uses a topological map to navigate to a previously unseen target location. During path traversal, the system relies on a local navigation layer to avoid obstacles not modeled in the map. Data from this local layer is abstracted to learn both realistic topological edge cost measures and local traversability maps wh...
متن کاملTopologically-directed navigation
Recent advances in simultaneous localization and mapping permit robots to autonomously explore enclosed environments and, subsequently, navigate to selected positions within them. But, for many tasks, it is more useful to immediately navigate to goals in unexplored environments, without a map. This is possible if a human director can describe the ideal route to the robot using grounded symbols ...
